An idiom is a phrase or expression that typically presents a figurative, non-literal meaning attached to the phrase; but some phrases become figurative idioms while retaining the literal meaning of the phrase. Categorized as formulaic language, an idiom's figurative meaning is different from the literal meaning. Idioms occur frequently in all languages; in English alone there are an estimated twenty-five thousand idiomatic expressions. Idioms are expressions that help us describe an exact situation in a different, more creative way. They share cultural and historical information and broaden people’s understanding of a language. Idioms build up some distinctive features which can differ from one language to another. And what’s more interesting, idioms can sometimes reflect certain cultural traditions and personalities.

English Proverbs and Idioms is an idiomatic expression course book for university students in Iran whose major field is English as a foreign language. This book is written to help you improve your knowledge of idioms in English. It is important that you learn about the meanings of idioms and about how they are used. You can use this book either with your teacher or for self-study. Sometimes in the past, teachers used to argue that it was a waste of time for learners to study idioms as they might start using them in an inaccurate or unsuitable way. This book focuses just on those idioms which EFL students need to know and it aims to provide the information and practice which will help you understand and use them correctly.

The book has 20 units of different English idioms which are organized according to the topic area that they are used to talk about. First page of every unit presents the idioms that are worked on in the unit. You will find and explanation of the meaning of each idiom and example of it in use. The next pages in each unit checks that you have understood the information on the previous page by providing you a series of exercises that practice the material just presented. The exercises pay particular attention to checking your understanding of the idioms and how they are used because this is more important for most EFL learners than being able actively use them. The book also has a key to all the exercises.
